relaxation meditation

Calming blue circles giving a sense of peace.

Relaxation meditation is a way of relaxing the mind.
It is a training in quiet stable presence, familiarising ourselves with the relaxation of just being
and the gradual cultivation of calmness.

The approach is fundamental here. Our old internal habits which prevent us from really relaxing and being at ease have a lot of momentum behind them. We cannot just switch them off. So we learn how to gradually relax these habits and thus allow everything to settle. As we do this we simultaneously develop the capacity to simply sit quietly. With these two together - relaxing habits/tendencies and developing stable presence - peace, calmness and ease begin to arise.

To get the experience of being physically fit as the result of running or swimming takes consistent effort – an approach.
That is just how it is. Relaxation meditation works in exactly the same way. It is not particularly difficult, but a consistent
approach and clear understanding are essential. To that end we offer daily online relaxation meditation classes.

Full class/course details are below, but attending an introductory session first is highly recommended.

A peaceful scene in calming deep blues showing simple trees under an open sky.

Come along to an introductory class and meet David,
We will practice some of the basics of what is taught here
and learn about the ongoing course.
(A discount for the first week of classes is included in the introductory class.)

the classes/course

The daily online classes and course are designed to be (hopefully) as accessible and manageable as possible. Just 30 minutes a day. That's it. Simple.

This is a rolling eight-week course, so you can start on any Monday.
Eight weeks is probably the best amount of time to get an honest sense of how this all works.

The course contents repeat every eight weeks and cycle continuously,
so you'll always be able complete the full course regardless of when you begin.

Classes run Monday through Friday, and you are encouraged to practice by yourself at least once
over the weekend to develop your own independence with the practice.

Each class is 30 minutes long.

David will always be there 10 minutes earlier for any questions, apart from Mondays.
On Mondays the question time is given to reviewing the basics for new joiners.

The first week costs £30 GBP. Each week thereafter is 30% less.
A discount for the first week is also provided upon attending the introductory class.

At the moment classes are aimed at mornings for UK/Europe people.
North American morning sessions are being considered.

class structure

Each class is entirely practical - actual practice.
All instructions, guidance and theory are given during the practice.
We learn by doing.

We utilise some simple breathing principles very briefly at the start of each class.
These help us centre ourselves, release tension and create some space in the mind itself.

As we develop the capacity to sit and be present, learning to relax, and cultivating calmness -
various insights and pointers are given.
These are employed as a form of skilful means that help us loosen the mind and
get a clearer understanding so that we can practice more effectively.

course contents

The following contents of the course provide deeper understanding of the conditions we find
ourselves in and how we can realistically work with them to relax.

- the psychology of practice
- common difficulties
- the causes of stress and anxiety
-the nature of thought and conceptuality
- mind and the breath
- mind and awareness
- dissolving tension, physical and mental
- effort and effortlessness
- being vs doing
- conditioning
- the relaxation response
- awareness and space
- attitude as direction
- the body and sensation
- concentration and presence
- habits, tendencies and assumptions
- stories and narratives
- simplicity and natural mind

This may all sound like a lot, but don't be put off! This isn't a philosophy or theory class.
These principles are introduced very succinctly, to help deepen our experiential understanding so that we can better let go and get unstuck, that is all.
Look at them as insightful ingredients that we add into our ever-growing understanding/recipe of practice.
